{Part One: The Process}
Today I did something I never thought I’d do (and until today didn’t realize it was on my bucketlist) - I helped bottle and label the newest batch of American gin, aged barrel gin, rye whiskey, and bourbon at a distillery.
There’s a distillery in Evanston (the first suburb north of Chicago) that put out a call for volunteers to help bottle and label their latest batches today. I had been meaning to check out the place (they do tours and tastings), but haven’t had a chance to yet. So, I took this opportunity to help them out (and ended up being able to sample what they distill, which was a great bonus). The aged barrel gin is actually my favorite - I’m not a fan of gin generally (although their American gin is really good), but he was explaining that aged barrel gin is very similar to a whiskey, aside from the second distilling process. I’m such a whiskey girl at heart, so I think that’s why I loved it so much.
I was so fascinated by it all though, and it was great to meet some really cool people, learn a little history, and see the process first hand..not to mention add my name to a FEW label to put on the door of the distillery to keep track of everyone who has helped bottle. I will definitely do this again if they have another session.
(This is the first in a series of posts on the subject. I have a ton of photos and wanted to split them up. Click on each photo for the caption).
