Book fans…please help?

So as you may know, I’ll be gone for two months this summer in New England working for a college prep program. I’m also falling way behind on my 50 book goal, so I’m hoping to get quite a bit of reading done this summer between plane, train, and bus trips, and downtime in the dorm.

I’ve decided to seriously consider getting an e-reader. Normally, I’m against them. I like the feel of a book. I like the thrill of turning pages. I’d be afraid of my e-reader breaking or getting lost. I don’t like reading on a screen as much as on paper. But, I figured it may be worth the money since:

  • I don’t want to weigh my suitcase down with books when I will be schlepping all over New England and only have one small rolling suitcase to hold everything for 2 months.
  • I’d be afraid to take library books with me in case they get lost, or if they get recalled and I obviously won’t be able to return them from 1000 miles away
  • I don’t want to buy books when I’m there because books are expensive, and then I’ll still have to worry about getting them home after my 2 months are done.

Because I’ve never really given much thought to e-readers before, I haven’t researched them and I know nothing about them. Which is better, the Kindle or the Nook? Can they do anything other than read books? Would it be better to splurge and get an ipad? Is it relatively easy to find free ebooks/get ebooks from various public libraries? What’s the cheapest and/or easiest option out there?

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

  2. apeculiarcontradictorything said: I got a Kindle for christmas. And I swear to god -it hasn’t converted me to electronic books, just to reading on a reader completely eye-friendly screen when I’m traveling. It’s been amazing to carry dozens of books with me, so nice.
  3. apeculiarcontradictorything answered: I collect books. Every time I am in a used book store, there’s a list in my head, I’m looking for that perfect beat up copy to add. But…
  4. sweatpantstime answered: I had the same concerns as you. I prefer the touch of actual books. Last year I caved and got a kindle. I love it!
  5. loveistheteacher answered: I love my Kindle Touch! It was cheaper than the Nook ($79 vs. $99). If you already have a computer, skip the iPad!
  6. ignitestrengths answered: I have the Kindle with wifi (not the Fire), and I LOVE it. The screen is amazing. I thought I’d be a tough sell, but I love it so much.
  7. bookbroken answered: Depends. I’d recommend going to Best Buy and looking at the versions of the Kindle and the iPad to see which format appeals to you the most.
  8. annaverity answered: I love my Kindle and though I have the app for my iPad, I don’t like reading that way bc of the screen. LOVE Kindle for traveling.
  9. strooooodle answered: Personally, if I wanted something that did more than just read, I would get a tablet so I could have the Kindle AND the Nook app.
